Discount Settings

Keep your best-margin products out of the discount

Not every product should carry the same discount when a shopper is about to leave. Exclude specific products or entire collections and NavonaAI's discount code simply won't apply to them — everything else in the cart is still covered.

How exclusions work

Live in your NavonaAI settings, under Exclude Products or Collections.

  • Open Manage Exclusions from your prevention settings and pick a Products tab or a Collections tab — exclude individual items, whole collections, or both.
  • The discount is built as an allowlist: every product in your catalog gets it except the ones you've excluded.
  • A product that also sits inside an excluded collection only counts once — removing the collection later leaves that individual exclusion in place.
  • Excluding anything switches the discount from whole-order to per-product — the same shift the Force Product-Level Discounts toggle makes on its own.

The trade-off: exclusions change how your discount stacks

Protecting margin on specific items isn't free — it changes what your discount can combine with everywhere else on the order too.

Excluding anything forces product-level scoping

The moment you exclude a single product or collection, NavonaAI stops discounting the whole order and starts discounting a specific list of products instead — regardless of whether Force Product-Level Discounts is switched on. It's not a setting you can decline while exclusions are active; it's a direct consequence of them.

Product-level scoping changes what it stacks with

Once scoped to products, the discount can combine with an order-level discount already applied to the cart — but it can no longer combine with a separate product discount on the same line item; Shopify keeps only the larger of the two. Full breakdown on how discounts stack.

How many products you can exclude depends on your discount path

Classic discount path

Lists what's still eligible for the discount — total catalog minus everything excluded. Shopify caps a single discount at 100 eligible products, so this works cleanly for surgical exclusions on a smaller catalog but can hit that ceiling on a large catalog with only light exclusions.

Discount Function path

Lists what's excludedinstead of what's eligible, so a large catalog is no obstacle. The limit here is a configuration size budget — roughly 200 excluded products — rather than a count of what remains.

Common questions

What actually happens to an excluded product?

It's left out of the discount's allowlist, so the discount code never applies to that line item. The shopper can still receive the discount on the rest of their cart — excluding a product doesn't stop the offer, it just keeps that one item out of it.

Why did my discount change how it stacks after I excluded a collection?

Setting any exclusion forces the discount to product-level scoping, the same as turning on Force Product-Level Discounts by hand. That change is automatic and not something you opt out of while exclusions are active — see how it affects stacking with other discounts on /features/discount-stacking.

Is there a limit to how many products I can exclude?

It depends on which discount path your store uses. The classic path lists what's still eligible, and that list is capped at 100 products by Shopify's own discount system — fine for excluding a handful of items from a small-to-medium catalog, but a large catalog with only light exclusions can hit that ceiling fast, since almost the whole catalog would need to be listed. The newer Discount Function path lists what's excluded instead of what's eligible, so it has no such cap — it's limited only by a configuration size budget, roughly 200 excluded products.

Can I exclude a collection I haven't created yet, or one with new products added later?

Yes — you exclude the collection itself, not a snapshot of its current members, so a product added to an excluded collection later is covered automatically.

Does excluding products affect Force Product-Level Discounts?

The two are linked one way: exclusions force product-level scoping regardless of that toggle's own setting. Turning Force Product-Level Discounts on manually (with no exclusions) has the same scoping effect and additionally locks on Combines with Order Discounts — see /features/discount-stacking for the full stacking picture.
