What installing NavonaAI on Shopify actually involves

Installing NavonaAI is a standard Shopify OAuth install — no separate account, no code to paste in, no engineer required. This page walks through what that install does, the one manual step in your theme editor that a lot of merchants miss, and exactly what data NavonaAI reads and doesn't.

Three steps, two of them in Shopify

The install screen, your NavonaAI dashboard, and one toggle back in Shopify's theme editor.

01

Install from the Shopify App Store

A standard Shopify OAuth install. You see the exact permissions NavonaAI is asking for before you approve anything — nothing is requested silently or added later without a new approval screen.

02

Set up your offer in the dashboard

You land in the NavonaAI dashboard to set the discount, who it's eligible for, and which products or collections it excludes. Nothing serves to a shopper until this is configured.

03

Turn on the storefront embed

One more step, in Shopify's theme editor, not the app install screen — covered next. Skip it and the app stays fully installed and configured with nothing showing on your storefront.

The step that's easy to miss: the theme app embed

NavonaAI's storefront piece ships as a Shopify theme app extension — the same mechanism any app uses to add something to your storefront without editing your theme's code directly. Shopify keeps that switched off by default on every install, for every app that uses it, until you turn it on yourself.

That means installing NavonaAI and configuring your offer in the dashboard is not enough on its own. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, open App embeds in the left panel, and switch NavonaAI on. Until that toggle is on, the app is fully installed and fully configured, and nothing shows on your storefront.

This is common enough that your NavonaAI dashboard checks for it directly — if the embed is off, you'll see a banner telling you so, with a link straight into the theme editor to fix it, rather than a store silently running with the popup off.

What NavonaAI reads, and why

Grouped by what each permission is actually for. For the exact Shopify access scope behind every one of these, see the full breakdown on our Security page.

What a shopper is doing right now

Cart, checkout, and on-site behavior, so NavonaAI knows what's actually in a cart at the moment the offer would appear.

Your product and collection catalog

To price the offer against what a shopper is buying and apply the eligibility and exclusion rules you set — a product or collection you exclude in your settings never gets a code.

Orders, once placed

To confirm when a discount was used and attribute it correctly in your dashboard, and to treat a draft order the same way as a regular one.

Your theme, locales, and markets

To confirm the storefront embed is active, render the offer in a shopper's own published language, and price it in the right market — not to read or modify your theme's design.

Plus one permission to act on all of this: creating and deactivating the Shopify discount code the offer runs on. It's an ordinary Shopify discount code, bounded by the terms you set — never an amount NavonaAI decides on its own. See /security for the permission-by-permission list.

What NavonaAI doesn't need

  • A shopper's email address or phone number. The offer is priced and applied without asking a shopper to hand over any contact details — that isn't a policy choice, there's simply no field for it anywhere in the popup.
  • Access to your customer list. NavonaAI does not request the Shopify permissions that would let it browse customer records — it only ever sees what a cart, checkout, or order webhook already contains.
  • Payment details. Checkout and payment happen entirely inside Shopify's own checkout — NavonaAI is not part of that step and never sees a card number.
  • Any code on your theme files. The storefront piece is a Shopify theme app embed, turned on and off from the theme editor — it never touches your theme's Liquid or template files.

Common questions

I installed NavonaAI but shoppers aren't seeing the offer. What's wrong?

Almost always the same thing: installing the app and turning on its storefront embed are two separate steps in Shopify's app model. Open your theme editor, go to App embeds, and confirm NavonaAI is switched on. Your NavonaAI dashboard will also flag this directly if it detects the embed is off.

Does NavonaAI need a developer to install?

No. It's the same OAuth install flow as any Shopify App Store app — any staff account with permission to install apps can do it — plus one toggle in the theme editor for the embed. No code to paste in and no theme file to edit.

Does NavonaAI ever ask my shoppers for their email or phone number?

No. The offer applies without collecting shopper contact details at any point in the flow.

Can NavonaAI see my customer list or their personal details?

No. NavonaAI doesn't request the permissions Shopify uses to read a store's customer records — it only sees the cart, checkout, and order data described above.

What happens to NavonaAI's access if I uninstall it?

It's revoked immediately. NavonaAI is notified in real time and stops serving to your storefront as part of the same event.
